Dengue in Curacao: Prevention and Awareness
Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne illness in Curacao. It occurs in seasonal waves and is more common during periods with increased rainfall.
The virus is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is active mainly during the daytime.
Common symptoms of Dengue
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Muscle and joint pain
- Extreme fatigue
Most cases are mild, but symptoms can feel intense for several days.
Treatment and medical guidance
There is no cure for Dengue. Treatment focuses on symptom relief. Recommended care:
- Rest
- Plenty of fluids
- Paracetamol (acetaminophen) for fever or pain
Avoid:
Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin until Dengue is ruled out, due to increased bleeding risk.

Prevention is the most important step.
- Use DEET or Picaridin repellents daily
- Apply repellent during daytime hours
