Jewish Cultural Historical Museum

400 Years of Jewish History in the Heart of Willemstad

Step inside one of Curacao's most extraordinary museums and discover the rich history of the island's Jewish community. Located next to the iconic Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue in Willemstad's historic downtown (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Jewish Cultural Historical Museum offers a fascinating look at nearly four centuries of Jewish life in the Caribbean.

Housing more than 1,000 unique objects - from silverware and ritual clothing to personal letters and photographs - the museum tells the story of faith, culture and family ties on Curacao. Many of the objects are still used during services in the adjacent synagogue.

Did you know.

The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue is the oldest continuously active synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, built in 1732. Inside, there is a layer of sand on the floor, symbolizing the 40 years the Jewish people traveled through the desert and as a reminder of secrecy during the Spanish Inquisition.

Recently renovated!

In May 2025, the museum underwent a major renovation, updating both the collection and the space itself. A fresh presentation, modern exhibit materials and interactive elements make this place even better for visitors of all ages.

What to expect:

  • An impressive collection of more than 1,000 objects about Jewish life on Curacao

  • Access to the oldest active synagogue in the western hemisphere

  • Treasure hunts, tours and educational activities

  • Exhibitions about the Second World War and migration stories, among others

  • Unique atmosphere with sand floor and active rituals in the synagogue

A visit to the Jewish Cultural Historical Museum is an enriching experience full of history, culture and personal stories - a not-to-be-missed stop in Willemstad.
