Curaçao at the 2026 World Cup: The Island's Most Historic Football Moment
On 18 November 2025, something happened on a small Caribbean island that its 156,000 residents had waited generations for. Curaçao qualified for the FIFA World Cup. For the first time in the island's history, The Blue Family steps onto the biggest stage in football. On June 14, 2026, Curaçao faces Germany in Houston, Texas, in its first-ever World Cup match.
This is more than a sports result. For an island the size of a small city, qualifying for the World Cup as the smallest nation ever to do so tells you something about what Curaçao is made of. We've been following this journey closely, and the energy on the island right now is unlike anything we've seen before.
How Curaçao Earned Its Place
The road to the 2026 World Cup began in June 2024, when Curaçao entered the CONCACAF qualifying rounds. The team won Group C in the second round, then topped Group B in the third round, earning a place among the best national teams in the world.
Dick Advocaat, now 78 years old and one of the most decorated coaches in Dutch football history, led Curaçao through the qualifying campaign. In February 2026, he stepped back temporarily due to a family situation, and returned in May 2026 after his successor Fred Rutten stepped down following unrest within the squad. With the World Cup days away, Advocaat becomes the oldest head coach in World Cup history.
The Blue Family: Meet the Team
The squad carries a distinctly Dutch character. Of the 26 players selected, twelve are active in the Netherlands, many with experience in the Eredivisie. Captain Leandro Bacuna leads the team alongside his brother Juninho Bacuna. Other well-known names include Jurgen Locadia and Brandley Kuwas, both with experience at high levels in Europe.
The team goes by two names: The Blue Family, the official nickname, and the Blue Wave, the supporter movement that has grown rapidly around this squad. The tournament anthem, 'THE BLUE WAVE' by island artist JEON, has played across the island since qualification was confirmed.

What the Island Feels Like Right Now
If you're on Curaçao right now, or arriving before June 25, you'll notice it the moment you land. Blue flags on cars, Blue Wave merchandise in shop windows, and a collective pride that has brought the whole island together. From Banda'bou to Banda'riba, every part of Curaçao is behind this team.
Watch parties are happening across the island for each group match. Waterfront spots in Willemstad, beach clubs along the west coast, and local bars are all broadcasting the games. The match against Germany on June 14 is drawing particular attention.
Experiencing the World Cup as a Visitor
The Punda and Otrobanda districts in Willemstad are the best places to be for the matches. The E-Scooter Eco Cruise around Willemstad during WK week gives you a close-up feel for the city's energy and the decorations that have transformed the streets.
Between the matches, the island is still the island. The Miss Ann Boat Trip to Klein Curaçao runs as normal, and the Blue Curacao Distillery Deluxe Tour has taken on extra resonance this summer. Toasting the island's World Cup debut with its own signature blue liqueur feels exactly right.
