Money & Currency

Money & Currency in Curacao: Using the Caribbean Guilder (XCG)

Curacao’s official currency is the Caribbean Guilder (XCG), in use since 31 March 2025. It is tied to the US Dollar at a fixed rate: XCG 1.79 = USD 1. US Dollars are widely accepted across the island, but paying in USD is often slightly more expensive due to a conversion margin. The Caribbean Guilder banknotes highlights marine life such as fish, turtles, and seahorses.

The Antillean Guilder (ANG) was valid until 30 June 2025. From 1 July 2025, payments in ANG are no longer accepted, though banks may still exchange old bills.

How to Pay in Curacao?

Visitors can pay in Curacao via debit card, credit card, or cash. Dutch debit cards generally work everywhere, including supermarkets, restaurants, and tourist shops. Credit cards, mainly Mastercard and Visa, are widely accepted, though American Express is used less often. Cash payments are possible in Caribbean Guilders anywhere and in USD at many taxis, local guides, and smaller vendors.

Paying in Caribbean Guilders using a debit card is usually the most affordable option. Carrying a small amount of cash or a backup credit card is recommended for situations where cards are not accepted or for ATM use.

Tip: Some restaurants or retail shops in touristic areas list prices in both currencies (XCG and USD). Always double-check the listed currency to avoid surprises.

Cashless & Mobile Payments

Mobile and contactless payments such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and wireless debit payments are widely accepted across the island. Most terminals allow fast “tap” payments, but contactless payments are often limited to XCG 100 per transaction. For larger purchases, you may be asked to insert your card, or to complete the total in multiple tap payments.

Withdrawing Cash at ATMs

ATMs are widely available and offer cash in XCG or USD. Fees are charged both by Curacao banks and your home bank, which can make small withdrawals relatively expensive (around €10 in extra charges is common). To reduce costs, withdraw larger amounts at once.

Using US Dollars in Curacao

US Dollars are common for taxis, tips, and some tourist services. Shops often use a rate around XCG 1.75 = USD 1, with change given in Caribbean Guilders.

Using Euro’s in Curacao

The Caribbean Guilder is valued at roughly XCG 2 per EUR 1. In late 2025, the rate is slightly higher at about XCG 2.10 per EUR 1. A quick mental estimate: divide the XCG amount by 2 and subtract a few percent. For precise conversions, use a currency app with up-to-date rates.

Euros are not accepted for direct payments in Curacao. Banks accept Euro bills in perfect condition only, and shops generally avoid them. If you want to exchange Euros, you must visit a commercial bank, bring your passport and flight ticket, and keep in mind: exchanges are limited to €300 per day and banks charge XCG 15–25. There are some exchange offices on the island.
