Christoffelpark
Located in the rugged northwest of Curacao you will find the impressive Christoffel National Park, the largest and most biodiverse nature reserve on the island. The park covers over 2,300 hectares, spread over three former plantations: Savonet, Zorgvlied and Zevenbergen. Nature lovers will find unique flora and fauna here, such as rare orchids and the endemic white-tailed deer.
With eight well-marked hiking trails - ranging from relaxed to adventurous - the park is perfect for hikers of all skill levels. The most popular route is the climb to the top of Mount Christoffel, Curacao's highest point at 375 meters. This hike takes an average of 1.5 to 2 hours (there and back), and in clear weather you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the island and even Venezuela. Other routes take you past old plantation trails, caves, cactus gardens and historic ruins.
For those who prefer not to explore on their own, there are organized jeep safaris and guided hikes led by expert guides. These tours offer additional insights into the ecology, history and geology of the area. At sunrise or sunset, the park is extra magical, especially during a guided sunrise walk or a birdwatching tour early in the morning.
Also visit the Savonet Museum, located in a restored 18th-century mansion, where you can learn about life on the former plantations and the cultural history of Curacao.
