The inviting little garden terrace alight with twinkling lanterns tucked away in the island’s most cosmopolitan dining and entertainment district doesn’t prepare you for the electric vibe that awaits within. With its mezzanine seating looking down onto the main dining room and open kitchen, this culinary emporium is much larger than it looks from the outside, and on any given night it’s packed to the rafters. With the hub of the activity often centered on their big beautiful bar you can’t help but be drawn to witness the first-rate barkeeps mixing masterpiece cocktails using fresh ingredients and wielding cool tools like mini blowtorches or smoking guns – and their talent for making amazing syrups using ingredients left over from other creations so as not to be wasteful is second to none. Watching them work is truly a lesson in the skill of bartending at its best. Then there’s the food.
Kome means ‘eat’ in Curaçao’s native language of Papiamentu. But at this popular spot, you don’t just come to eat – you come to enjoy an entire sensory experience of creative cuisine, lively camaraderie, and killer cocktails.
The Kome concept is simple: provide contemporary takes on popular international fare using as many local farm sourced products as possible, and present them in creative, appealing, and often shareable fashion. Oh yes, and make it fun, too. Enjoy offbeat and surprising specialities like chicken & waffles with local honey and hot sauce, a nod to southern comfort food as the owners are originally from the Southeastern US, unique sides to accompany locally caught fish like sorrel-pomegranate tabouli and saffron fennel or their signature dessert, the Kome Bolo, featuring a combination of flourless chocolate cake, passionfruit mousse, and tropical fruits. Plus, their creative array of appetizers is sure to delight even the most discerning diner. They also serve an excellent à la carte Saturday brunch with bottomless Bloody Marys and Mimosas, fresh doughnuts, and choices for every palate from buttermilk chicken biscuit with sausage gravy to eggs benedict with their own cured fish, to a smoked brisket hash with chipotle hollandaise sauce. To top it off their servers are efficient and knowledgeable yet always fun and friendly, too!
The menus rotate often depending on seasonally available ingredients, but there are always vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and every Wednesday is always Tapas Night. Kome also has a special late-night party they call The Punch the second Saturday of each month featuring the island’s best house and hip-hop DJs transforming the dining room into a nightclub.
But whenever you dine there – lunch, dinner, brunch, or a late-night snack – always leave room for dessert. They are the only restaurant on Curaçao with an in-house pastry chef (think irresistibly decadent delights) and their exotic flavors of house-made ice cream are not to be missed. Reservations are highly recommended, closed Sunday and Monday.
